Featured Artist – Robert Crooker – Studio 120

Our very first Featured Artist is Acrylic Painter Robert Crooker! You can find Robert at Western Ave in Studio 120. Find out more about Robert below:

RobertCrooker1

Q: Tell us a little bit about your background. Where are you from? Where did you study? How long have you been an artist?

A: A current resident of Wakefield, Massachusetts, Robert Crooker comes from a family with a long heritage in the arts. He however, considers himself a self-taught artist.

His earlier years were spent collecting Vintage Disney Collectibles and becoming a world-renowned expert in Vintage Disney merchandise. This passion propelled him to start painting Disney’s characters; he calls that period “his practice years”. These works were necessary to fuel the love for the arts and helped him refine his skills until he was able to adventure on his own and produce the work that he is now known for.

Q: What is your biggest obstacle with your art?

A: Being self taught I find that I have to practice and practice in order to get the correct results. For example, it took me close to 20 different paintings to finally make water look like water, so that if you could put your hand into my painting it would come out wet. I still have difficulty painting clouds and waves and will continue to practice.

Q: Describe a typical art creativity session. What is it like? For example, do you work in silence, or do you work to music? Do you prefer to be alone, or do you need people around?

A: I have a 3rd floor loft in my home equipped with easels and music which is always playing. I pretty much paint alone in my loft but I have also painted in my Western Ave. Studio during Open Studio weekends, that provides an audience.

Q: What advice do you have for someone just starting out as an artist?

A: Stick to it! It takes a long time to improve. If you are truly talented then that talent will grow. After a lifetime of being a painter I sometimes cannot believe I did some of the paintings that I have signed. SO! strive to amaze yourself….

Q: Tell us about some of your goals for the next 6-12 months.

A: My goal from day 1 in 2015 is to produce 50 or more paintings. Currently on January 16th I have completed 6. Total painting hours to complete those 6 is about 100 hours.

RobertCrooker3You can visit Robert in his Studio #120 at Western Avenue Studios. You can also catch him at the following upcoming events:

Grace Chapel Art Gallery, Lexington MA.
