SUMMARY:Caomhnórí- Music and Mosaic Artists Collaborate at Western Avenue Lofts
DESCRIPTION:    Caomhnórí\n  \nThree artists at Western Avenue Lofts are presenting collaboratively about their work and the common threads that link them. Residents of the Western Avenue Lofts\, Paul Carlson\, a renowned concert pianist\, Seiki Imagica\, a Japanese Flamenco guitarist and global digital music producer\, and Meghan Walsh\, an internationally-recognized contemporary stone mosaic artist and architect will present their work and discuss artistic influences in a late afternoon gathering at Loft 112 at Western Avenue Lofts on Saturday\, April 1st\, 2023\, from 4:45-6:15pm.  \nThe performance ends that day of Open Studios at the Western Avenue Studios and Lofts that same day from 12-5p. Paul Carlson will be playing rarely played work of Alan Hovhaness\, an Armenian-American composer born and raised in Somerville/ Andover who passed away in 2000. Flamenco guitarist Seiki Imagica will be focusing on Japanese traditional music\, rich in minor chords. Meghan Walsh\, a recent Lowell resident\, originally from Salem\, MA who has lived overseas and in Washington\, DC for most of her adult life\, will present her work in the context of the ancient stone mosaic tradition and the current global evolution in contemporary art.  \nA small collection of Walsh’s work will be on display at Loft 112 for the first time in Lowell in a collection called Caomhnórí – a word in the Irish language – Gaeilge – meaning ‘guardians’ or ‘custodians’ in English. The word signifies the way that traditional and historical arts can both be preserved but still transform. Walsh uses Irish language words to name many of her works of art and exhibitions to intentionally to call attention to all UNESCO-endangered languages and the critical importance to our collective humanity of what is often invisible and undervalued.   \n

We will also be welcoming Nibbana Cafe to their first-ever Open Studios event! \nFood truck of the day: Empanada Dada (Outside our Main Entrance) \nThis month the Loading Dock Gallery hosts a show titled “Fire and Fiber”. With an artist reception from 3 pm until 5 pm. \nCovid-19 Guidelines:\n– Face coverings/masks are not required but recommended since some studios and businesses may require them for admission into their space.\n– Guests experiencing Covid-19 symptoms or having been instructed to quarantine by a medical professional should not attend.\n– We will have hand sanitation stations throughout the building. \nThere is no charge for this event. This event is dog-friendly. We just ask that you keep your pup on a leash.

DESCRIPTION:ATTENTION ALL STAFF: \nStop your Tik Tok/Instagram doom scrolling and report for this month’s MANDATORY COMPANY MEETING\, in which we will discuss:\ngrotesque narrative artworks inspired by 3 years of mostly working from home- virtual meetings\, toxic politics\, impending doom\, protests\, illness (both viral and chronic genetic issues)\, collapsing ethics and morality\, and grasping for love and hope amidst chaos. \nCompany Meeting combines paintings and drawings created during the great upheaval of the 2020s. Grotesque\, cartoonish figures twist\, explode\, and bend backwards into psychedelic eruptions of color\, pattern\, and detail. Sandagata’s works critique and question\, melding elements of pop culture\, 80s comics\, countercultural movements\, punk\, heavy metal\, chronic illness\, politics and contemporary art into a visual riot. \nRobb Sandagata was born in New Haven\, CT and has lived in New York\, Arizona\, and Massachusetts. Significant influences\, in roughly chronological order\, include: cartoons\, comic books\, Dungeons & Dragons\, “Alternative” music\, punk rock\, theater\, competitive debate\, mid-90s Hardcore\, and band t-shirts. SUMMARY:Black & White at the Loading Dock Gallery
DESCRIPTION:At Loading Dock Gallery\, Sandrine Colson and Jean Wallace present Black & White. Black and white are culturally powerful signifiers. Black and white thinking reduces the world to binary choices. Black & White explores perception: opposites and the nuances in between. \nColson sees herself as a storyteller. She works abstractly\, using bold marks and intricate shapes\, often referencing natural forms. Her work is filled with paint swirls\, playful paper cut-outs\, and three-dimensional objects\, resulting in richly textured canvases with intricate layers and meanings. \nWallace draws inspiration from personal experience while addressing universal themes such as family\, strength\, loss\, and grief. Her work is narrative\, visceral\, and documentary. She works with a variety of media including photography\, encaustic painting\, and mixed media. \nBlack & White runs February 4-26\, 2023 at Loading Dock Gallery\, 122 Western Avenue\, Lowell\, MA\, open noon-5:30pm\, Wednesday-Saturday\, and noon-4pm Sundays. SUMMARY:Company Meeting: New Works by Robb Sandagata at Storage Closet Gallery
DESCRIPTION:ATTENTION ALL STAFF: \nStop your Tik Tok/Instagram doom scrolling and report for this month’s MANDATORY COMPANY MEETING\, in which we will discuss:\ngrotesque narrative artworks inspired by 3 years of mostly working from home- virtual meetings\, toxic politics\, impending doom\, protests\, illness (both viral and chronic genetic issues)\, collapsing ethics and morality\, and grasping for love and hope amidst chaos. \nCompany Meeting combines paintings and drawings created during the great upheaval of the 2020s. Grotesque\, cartoonish figures twist\, explode\, and bend backwards into psychedelic eruptions of color\, pattern\, and detail. Sandagata’s works critique and question\, melding elements of pop culture\, 80s comics\, countercultural movements\, punk\, heavy metal\, chronic illness\, politics and contemporary art into a visual riot. \nRobb Sandagata was born in New Haven\, CT and has lived in New York\, Arizona\, and Massachusetts. Significant influences\, in roughly chronological order\, include: cartoons\, comic books\, Dungeons & Dragons\, “Alternative” music\, punk rock\, theater\, competitive debate\, mid-90s Hardcore\, and band t-shirts. He lives and works in Lowell\, Massachusetts.
