Celebrating ArtWeek Differently This Year

ArtWeek in a pandemic.

The art community is resilient and our Outdoor Art Markets are an example of that. Traditionally the first week of May is a week of celebrating the arts in Massachusetts. What started as Artweek Boston quickly has become a statewide celebration. While Artweek is officially taking a hiatus this year, we still want to celebrate the arts in a safe and fun manner. Our Outdoor Art Markets present more than an opportunity to see art and bring home the perfect piece that speaks to you. It is an opportunity to speak and interact with the artists behind the pieces, a chance to learn more about the person behind your favorite art pieces.

The theme behind ArtWeek is a celebration, a celebration of the arts. Keeping true to this, we’re currently working on some fun exciting things to add a more immersive experience to this month’s Outdoor Art Market. Follow on our official Facebook event page to stay up to date.

To ensure an art-filled future, one must support the artists of the future. Western Avenue Studios is home to Refuge Lowell. Refuge Lowell provides a safe, equitable space for local students to explore their talents and develop as artists through nurturing, mentorship, and rigorous arts instruction. During this market, Refuge will be hosting a special art show and fundraiser. Fundraisers and donations are vital in offering art education to local youths. Visit their table and studio to learn how you can help support these kids.

The art of farming. 

One of our focuses for this year is to grow deeper, instead of larger. As part of this, we’re growing partnerships with local community members and organizations to better the community. One of the ways we’re planning on doing this is by allocating part of our Outdoor Art Markets to local farmers and food-related vendors. In an effort to bring locally grown and produced foods to this part of Lowell.

Loading Dock Gallery & art you can taste!

While we may be outside for this event, we will have a couple of Open Studios staples. The Loading Dock Gallery will be open for in-person browsing, featuring the debut of their Full Bloom Three show. This is a Loading Dock Gallery member show, featuring the works of their diverse membership. The gallery will be open 12-5:30 pm. Across the hall from the gallery, there’s a new special treat, Tiny Arms Coffee. Our very first coffee shop and cafe, featuring rich coffee roasted right here at Western Avenue! The coffee shop will be open from 8 am till 4:30 pm. It wouldn’t be a Western Avenue event without a food truck, and this month Empanada Dada will be bringing their signature mouth-watering empanadas. End the day with Navigation Brewing Company, serving up handcrafted beers brewed right here at Western Avenue. The brewery will be open from 4 pm till 10 pm, with its spacious outdoor patio.

Covid-19 guidelines

In order to bring you a fun and safe in-person event, we have instituted some safety rules for our first-ever Outdoor Art Market. Safety is our number one concern, we hope you understand, we can’t wait to see you!

– Guests who are experiencing Covid-19 symptoms or have been instructed to quarantine by a medical professional should not attend.
– All guests must wear a mask or face covering at all times.
– Please maintain a six-foot distance from others.
– We will have hand sanitation stations throughout the market space.
– Dogs are allowed, they just have to be on a leash and you’re responsible for cleaning up after them.

There is no charge for this event, admission is free.
