“Since childhood, I’ve been drawn to maps, paintings, and mythology—ways of seeing that connect us to the past while helping us make sense of the present. Ancient Roman and Greek myths once offered me that bridge, and now I find similar power in painting. For me, each painting is like a map, an exploration of feeling, memory, and place that leads us back to the origins of creation and forward into understanding the present moment.
I begin with a feeling and a vision of color, layering thin washes of paint that slowly build a landscape. These layers, bright, subtle, and deeply connected, interact like stories in a myth or paths on a map. My goal is to create terrain others can travel, guides that illuminate different aspects of the here and now. I see painting as an ongoing conversation, one that brings us together and invites us to look more closely at the world and ourselves.” ~ James Flynn
