About This Artist

Artist Name: Debra Ciccone-O’Connell

Debra Ciccone-O’Connell is a visual storyteller, painter, illustrator, mixed media artist and art educator who spent much of her early life in the Lakes Region area of NH.  In the fall of 2007 she moved to Chelmsford MA where she now resides with her husband and and two children. In the fall of 2013 she came to Western Avenue Studios and kept a studio on the 4th floor until the summer of 2020. After a 4 year absence she has returned and is happily maintain a studio once again.

My work is about the ways in which I choose to interpret life at any given place and moment in time. I often use dramatic color, contrast, movement and abstraction to express my response to the seemingly ordinary and beautiful images and events that I observe, feel and remember.

In my pastel paintings I am interested in exploring the boundaries of color, and abstraction which I use in varying degrees depending on my response to the imagery and the need within the composition. In other works I create, mixed media paintings and paper sculptural works in the form of books. I often use personally meaningful symbolic imagery that is embedded to the point that they are partially obscured. In this way I am able to share a visual story without words which is also something I find engaging.

As a working artist I am driven to continue to evolve as I explore my creative process boldly and unapologetically with integrity. I do not choose to be confined to any one specific artistic style instead, I choose to take risks and push boundaries as I continue in my life long practice.

In my professional career I have had much of my work exhibited in solo, juried and group shows. My work has recently been on display at The Kimball Jenkins Estate in Concord NH, The Museum of the White Mountains in Plymouth NH, and the Galleries at 30 Main in Meredith NH.
