LOWELL, MA — September 12, 2025 Western Avenue Studios & Lofts, one of the largest artist communities in the country, and the largest in New England, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with two milestone events this fall: a 20th Anniversary Open Studios on Saturday, October 4, 2025, and Luminosity, a one-night-only fundraiser and celebration on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

From Mills to Makers

Once home to the Massachusetts Mohair Plush Company—an 1891 textile manufacturer that produced high-quality mohair plush for furniture, railroad cars, and later automobiles —Western Avenue has been transformed into a thriving creative campus over the past two decades. In 2004, real estate developer Karl Frey purchased the five-building, 240,000-square-foot complex along the Pawtucket Canal. Originally intended for commercial tenants, the site’s future shifted after a serendipitous meeting with local artists.

By the fall of 2005, 45 artists had moved into 33 studios in an unoccupied section of the mill complex. As large commercial tenants departed, new studios quickly took their place. Just seven years later, the entire site had been converted into 250 studios and 50 live/work lofts. In 2022, stewardship of Western Avenue passed to the nonprofit Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston through its Creative Land Trust Initiative, with the mission to keep the complex preserved as artist space. As a non-profit, Western Avenue is dedicated to maintaining permanently affordable artist space and connecting culture with community.

A Creative Ecosystem

Today, Western Avenue is home to nearly 400 artists and makers, working across an extraordinary spectrum of disciplines—from painters, photographers, and sculptors to fiber artists, ceramicists, woodworkers, and even performers and circus aerialists—alongside a range of creative partners and small businesses. The artist-run Loading Dock Gallery, established in 2008, presents monthly exhibitions, while the beloved Nibbāna Café brings food, and gathering space to the campus. Refuge, a nonprofit art school, provides accessible art education for youth and young adults. Taffeta Music Hall hosts live performances and events, while Lowell Makes offers shared tools and workshops for makers.

Since 2005, Western Avenue has opened its doors to the public every first Saturday of the month for Open Studios—a unique, behind-the-scenes experience where visitors can step inside working studios, meet the artists, and purchase original work directly from its makers. Guests often encounter works in progress, live demonstrations, and special installations, alongside music, food trucks, and community energy that fills the mill complex. As Executive Director Hope Greene explains, “This is more than just an art show—it’s a chance to step inside the creative process and connect personally with the artists.” Through blizzards, through heatwaves, and even through the pandemic, Western Avenue has offered Open Studios every month for twenty years.
